Inner lining of trachea is ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium. Trachea (windpipe)-a rigid tube Supported by 16 to 20 C-shaped rings of hyaline cartilage that reinforce trachea and prevent collapse during inhalation. Also Contains vocal cords and prduces sound. Contains Epiglottis-flap of tissue that guards the superior opening of the larynx so food doesn't go down. Receives auditory tubes and contains pharyngeal tonsil, !passes only air! 2)Oropharynx: -Space between soft palate and epiglottis -Contains palatine tonsils 3)Laryngopharynx: -Epiglottis to cricoid cartilage -Esophagus begins at that point !Oropharynx and laryngopharynx pass air, food, and drink and are lined by stratified squamous epithelium! Larynx (voice box)-cartilaginous chamber whos Primary function is to keep food and drink out of the airway. from the choanae to the larynx -Three regions of pharynx: 1) Nasopharynx: above soft palate. Nasal Cavity and sinuses: -Lined with stratified squamous epithelium -Vibrissae: stiff guard hairs that block insects and debris from entering nose -Superior, middle, and inferior nasal conchae (turbinates) -Meatus-narrow air passage beneath each concha -Narrowness ensure that most air contacts mucous membranes -Cleans, warms, and moistens the air Pharynx: -Pharynx (throat)-muscular funnel extending about 5 in.
